Route 560 Roadwork Updates and Timelines

Below you will find the latest information on Kuhio Highway Route 560 (Princeville Center to Ke'e) roadwork projects, project progress and expected completion dates. This info is updated in real time as we receive it.

Current Projects and Expected Completion Dates: As of 12/1/2025

 

Hanalei Hill Permanent Repair

  • Project completed

  • New fencing at top is semi-permanent: after vegetation grows, fence may be removed if DOT deems safe to do so.

  • Vegetation planted on hillside is mix of Awikiwiki vine, Bougainvillea and Mandevilla vine.

 

Waikoko Rock Scaling

  • Project completed.

 

Resurfacing Project from Kalihiwai Ridge to Ka Haku Road – Night Work (4 miles)

  • Project on pause until January when night work can continue. 

  • Expected completion date: April 2026.

Resurfacing Project from Princeville to Waikoko: Repaving Phase (MM 0 – MM 4.5)

  • Contractor: Hi’ilawe.

  • Beginning December 20th:

    • New raised crosswalks west of Hanalei Post Office.

    • Drainage improvements near Malolo Rd for areas where there was ponding during last flood event.

  • Starting first week of January:

    • Night work repaving near Hanalei bridge to remove a drop in road on Hanalei side of bridge and highway towards Hanalei town.

    • DOT was asked to encourage its contractor to prioritize completion of the work in Hanalei town before repaving work east and west of town.

  • DOT will emphasize to contractor: no widening of asphalt beyond what is specified in contract.

  • Expected completion date: June 2026.

 

Resurfacing Project from Princeville to Waikoko: Pedestrian Path Phase

  • Contractor: Hi’ilawe and Boyer

  • HWHCA requested a walkthrough with DOT of the pedestrian path project to discuss areas of concern:

    • DOT staff and the contractor conducted a site visit with community association board members and community representatives on November 26. Measures were discussed to:

      • Keep vehicles from driving and parking on the path; protect the grassed area between the path and the highway

      • Protect pedestrians from bikes, motorized bikes and other motorized devices on the path

      • Slow-down speeding traffic in the school zone. 

  • The remaining work on the path should be completed by Christmas.

  • Sheehan segment: Currently working on HDOT clearances for pedestrian bridge. Sheehan to dedicate portion to HDOT.

  • Expected completion date: February 2026.

 

Waikoko Hairpin Turn Emergency Stabilization Project (Lumahai)

  • Phase 1 – Shotcrete wall almost pau. Final pour will be the sculpted and textured, colored finish. Jan 2026.

  • Phase 2 – Parking lot area: slight adjustment of wall alignment.

  • Barrier pour: textured and painted with lava rock facing. Upcoming.

    • Barrier wall with rock veneer will be located to allow room for pedestrians/bicyclists but prevent shoulder parking.

    • Community requests that barrier wall height be kept to minimum through context sensitive design via SB1876.

  • When project completed, mauka travel lane will be removed and landscaped with naupaka to eliminate possibility for mauka shoulder parking. Naupaka requested: most resilient native that is hearty enough thrive in shaded area with poor soil, and able to withstand ironwood’s allelopathic root system.

  • Temporary traffic signal installed late August (after Waikoko project open to two lane traffic)

    • Single lane during work hours to do drilling on mauka side slope

  • Expected completion date: February 2026.

 

Repaving Project from Kepuhi to Ke‘e (MM 8 – MM 10)

  • Hi’ilawe will start on this section of repaving after it finishes Princeville to Waikoko repaving project.

  • MM 9.3 – ongoing rebuild of shoulder, flowing drainage ditch and culvert.

    • 320 feet of reconstruction work planned. Working on logistics of getting equip over Wainiha bridges.

    • Flowing drainage ditch will need geo-fabrics and triaxial mesh to stabilize.

  • Expected start date: June 2026

  • Expected completion date: September 2026.
