Route 560 Roadwork Updates and Timelines

Below you will find the latest information on Kuhio Highway Route 560 (Princeville Center to Ke'e) roadwork projects, project progress and expected completion dates. This info is updated in real time as we receive it.

Current Projects:

 

Hanalei Hill Permanent Repairs

  • July 28 thru September 15: night work schedule:

    • Weeknights: full closure:

      • 6PM to 11PM Single Lane Closure

      • 11PM to 4:30AM Full Closure

      • 4:30AM – 5:30AM Single Lane

    • Weekends: single lane 8PM – 11PM

    • This schedule needed to accommodate reconstruction of pavement

  • Other work to complete:

    • Upper grass swale (across the fire station)

    • Backfilling collar connection at bottom

    • Tunnel curving from old irrigation tunnel

    • Guardrail installation (brown)

    • Planting

    • Striping

  • Overall project completion date (both Hanalei Hill and Waikoko Rock Scaling): November

 

Waikoko Rock Scaling

  • Project to address rockfall only with anchored mesh, no road widening

  • Estimate 900 soil nails needed to anchor wire mesh: as of July 24: 774 drilled, 764 grouted

  • Barriers and traffic signal removed (restoring two lanes) by end of August

  • Expected completion: end of August

 

Resurfacing Project from Kalihiwai Ridge to Ka Haku Road (4 miles)

  • Final striping: July 28 – mid September. Contractor Apply-A-Line

    • Rumble strip grinding

    • Permanent striping

      • Restore shoulders

      • Remove temporary Princeville right turn lane

  • Expected completion: Late September

Resurfacing Project from Princeville to Waikoko (MM 0 – MM 4.5)

  • Contractor: Hiilawe.

  • Night work ongoing (no night work Sept 15 – Dec 15 for shearwater fledgling season).

  • DOT will emphasize to contractor: no widening of asphalt beyond what is specified in contract.

  • DOT looking for opportunities to keep contractor busy during shearwater season: may try daytime paving near Hanalei bridge – if this causes long traffic delays, will cancel.

  • Expected completion: June 2026.

 

Resurfacing Project from Princeville to Waikoko - Pedestrian Improvements

  • Contractor: Hi’ilawe and Boyer

  • Construction ongoing.

  • Orange fencing coming down week of July 28

  • Sheehan segment: Currently working on HDOT clearances for pedestrian bridge. Sheehan to dedicate portion to HDOT.

  • When restriping done, can reassess proximity of pedestrians to traffic in area of THI where path juts out into road.

  • Expected completion of walkway to post office: September

 

Waikoko Hairpin Turn Emergency Stabilization Project (Lumahai)

  • Phase 1 – slope stabilization: nearly complete. Shotcrete wall almost pau then final pour to be textured and colored.

  • Phase 2 – Parking lot area: slight adjustment of wall alignment.

  • Barrier pour: textured and painted with lava rock facing. Upcoming.

    • Barrier wall will be located to allow room for pedestrians/bicyclists but prevent shoulder parking.

    • Community requests that barrier wall height be kept to minimum through context sensitive design via SB1876.

  • When project completed, mauka travel lane will be removed and landscaped with naupaka to eliminate possibility for mauka shoulder parking. Naupaka requested: most resilient native that is hearty enough thrive in shaded area with poor soil, and able to withstand ironwood’s allelopathic root system.

  • Temporary traffic signal installed late August (after Waikoko project open to two lane traffic)

    • Single lane during work hours to do drilling on mauka side slope

  • Expected completion: October 2025.  

 

Hanalei Bridge Traffic Monitoring and Management Pilot Program

  • THI traffic monitoring, data collection & flagging plan submitted to DOT for review. DOT approved conceptual plan.

  • Program will need Road Permit, including Traffic Control Plan stamped and signed by Hawaii licensed engineer and certificate of liability insurance.

  • Pilot program possible Christmas 2025.

 

THI 90-day Monitoring and Passive Management Program at Hā‘ena Beach Park

  • THI staff on-site. Joel update?

 

MM 8 – 10 Repaving:

  • Hiilawe.

  • Week of 7/7 night work done at MM 9.3

  • Week of 7/28 night work to be done near MM 8 repairing potholes

  • More work in future planned at MM 9.3:

    • 320 feet of recon work planned. Working on logistics of getting equip over Wainiha bridges.

    • Flowing ditch will need geo-fabrics and triaxial mesh to stabilize.

  • Expected completion date: ?
